Kloochman Park is special for a number of reasons. First it is not easy to find but once found and explored it is an experience not easily forgotten.
To get there, going west on Marine Drive, go past the entrance to Lighthouse Park (Beacon Lane) and take the next left, Howe Sound Lane. There is no signage on Marine Drive indicating the park. Watch for a sign on the right once you pass The Byway also on the right. The sign is set back so that it may be difficult to spot in the shade. There is street parking for about 3 or 4 cars close to this spot.
Depending on a person's physical ability it could take up to half an hour to reach the viewpoint. The first part is made up of a winding trail through dense growth between several private residences in this area. Once in the park proper a long set of stairs go down a significant elevation. From there a trail that can be considered clausterphobic at times passes around large rock outcroppings covered in moss and over roots, fallen trunks and vegetation typical of a temperate rain forest. Occasionally a clearing allows sunshine to reach the floor. For someone not used to these kinds of trails all the twists and turns to accomodate the terrain can be disorienting.
For those so inclined there is much vegetation to study and enjoy while resting. The end of the trail is a very large rock outcropping called Indian Bluff that provides spectacular views to the west and south. CAUTION!! Be very careful in this area. Once on the bluff the edge overlooks a vertical cliff that is dangerous for those who may not be steady on their feet or who do not have appropriate footwear. Do not take chances. Help is NOT nearby so do not go alone.
The trip back is the real challenge on this outing so go slow and easy because the uphill portions over rough ground and the stairs can leave you physically uncomfortable. FINAL WARNING. Keep an eye on seniors and children if there are any in your group.
